Quick answer
Warm the tape or glue with a hairdryer for 30-60 seconds, run dental floss or fishing line behind it to cut through the foam, and peel at a low angle. Remove the residue with a cloth and isopropyl alcohol or a few drops of oil or WD-40, leave it for 5 minutes and wash with soapy water. If the paint has peeled, fill with filler, sand and touch up.
What you need
- Hairdryer
- Dental floss or fishing line
- Plastic scraper or an old card
- Cloth or microfibre cloth
- Small craft knife
- 240 grit sanding block and a filling knife
- Isopropyl alcohol or cleaning alcohol
- Cooking oil or WD-40
- Water with mild soap
- Smoothing filler or wall filler for touch-ups
- Matching wall paint for the touch-up (Bruguer, Montó or Titan)
Step by step
- 1
Work out what you have
Touch the residue. If it is flexible foam, it is double-sided tape. If it is hard and shiny, it is contact adhesive or mounting adhesive. Choose the method from the table above.
- 2
Test on a hidden spot
Before using alcohol or a solvent, test in a corner or behind a piece of furniture. Wait 5 minutes and check the paint does not soften or change sheen.
- 3
Warm the adhesive
With the hairdryer on a medium setting and 10 cm from the wall, warm the tape or glue for 30-60 seconds. Heat softens the adhesive and makes it let go of the paint.
- 4
Cut the foam with thread
With the tape warm, run dental floss behind the foam, pulling it back and forth close to the wall, to split it into two layers. Take it slowly.
- 5
Peel at a low angle
Pull at a corner of the tape or residue, almost parallel to the wall, without lifting it suddenly. If it resists, warm it again and repeat.
- 6
Remove the sticky residue
Dampen a cloth with isopropyl alcohol, oil or a few drops of WD-40, rest it on the residue for 5 minutes and rub in gentle circles. If you use oil, remove the grease afterwards with soapy water.
- 7
If it is hard glue, soften it
Apply alcohol several times, patiently, and scrape with the plastic scraper. Never use metal when it is dry.
- 8
Wash and dry
Wipe with a cloth and mild soapy water to remove traces of alcohol or oil and leave it to dry for 30 minutes with ventilation.
- 9
Repair flaking patches
If the paint has lifted, fill with a thin layer of smoothing filler, leave it for 1 to 3 hours, sand with 240 grit and wipe off the dust.
- 10
Touch up with paint
Apply one or two coats of wall paint with a small roller, feathering the edges outwards so the patch does not show. Leave 4 hours between coats.
What glue is on your wall and what softens it
There is no single method because each adhesive reacts differently. Before you start, identify what it is, because that decides whether you use heat, a mild solvent or just water and patience.
Foam double-sided tape (the kind used for pictures and mirrors, Tesa Powerstrips type or generic) leaves a layer of white or grey foam that comes off in strips if you warm it. Contact adhesive or glue (Pattex, Loctite) leaves a hard film that softens with alcohol or acetone. Mounting adhesives (Sikaflex, SikaTack and similar) are more stubborn and often pull part of the wall away with them. And silicone remnants are a different case, which needs a craft knife and a specific cleaner.
| Adhesive | What softens it | How to remove it |
|---|---|---|
| Foam double-sided tape | Hairdryer heat | Thread behind it and peel at a low angle |
| Sticky tape residue | Isopropyl alcohol, oil or WD-40 | Cloth, 5 minutes to work and soapy water |
| Glue or contact adhesive | Alcohol, and acetone on unpainted surfaces | Plastic scraper, never metal when dry |
| Mounting adhesive (Sika and similar) | Heat and patience | Scraper, sometimes with part of the plaster: repair needed |
| Old silicone | Craft knife and silicone remover | Cut along the edges and rub off the rest |
How to choose the method without damaging the paint
The rule is to start with the gentlest option. Heat first, then soapy water, then alcohol, and only at the end a stronger solvent. Always test on a hidden spot, for example behind a piece of furniture: acetone and solvents can strip or soften emulsion, and alcohol marks some matt finishes.
On matt emulsion walls, which is the norm in flats in Valencia and Alicante, the glue usually comes away with a thin layer of paint, and that is normal with old tape. On washable satin paint the adhesive comes off with less damage. If the wall is wallpapered, the glue can tear the paper; see how to remove wallpaper.
Common mistakes when removing glue and tape
These are the slips that turn a €3 residue into a wall that needs repainting:
- Pulling the tape straight out from the wall. It tears off paint and plaster. Always pull at a low angle, almost parallel to the wall.
- Scraping dry with a metal scraper. It scratches the wall. Use a plastic scraper or an old card.
- Using acetone on paint. It dissolves emulsion and leaves a matt patch. Only on unpainted surfaces.
- Using too much heat. A hairdryer on full power held against the wall softens the paint. Keep it 10 cm away.
- Wetting too much. A plaster wall goes soft if you soak the area. Dampen only as much as needed.
- Painting over the residue. The glue shows through the new paint. Clean it off completely.
When to call a professional
It is a job of patience, not technique. Call a handyman or a painter if there are many pieces (for example a wall with 20 hooks, or a large mirror stuck up with mounting adhesive), if the plaster has already come away, or if you want the wall left ready to paint with no marks at all.
At Manitas Costa our handyman by the hour service does it: first hour €35-45 and €28-35 per hour after that, with a fixed price by WhatsApp from a photo. If the paint or plaster has peeled, repairing a flaking patch or crack costs €50-120 and painting the wall in white €6-8/m². See how much it costs to paint a flat and the painters service. We arrive in 20-45 minutes in Valencia, Alicante, Torrevieja and Benidorm, with a 6-month written guarantee.
Heat, damp and salt air: why tape lets go or sticks too hard
In summer on the coast, with sunny walls, foam tape softens and leaves a sticky residue; in winter with high humidity it falls off on its own. Salt and condensation on the seafront weaken the bond between paint and plaster, which is why tape pulls the paint off more easily. If you are going to hang something again, see how to hang pictures without drilling and choose strips rated for damp.
Before repainting the area, let the wall dry and sand lightly. To fill the hole or flaking patch left behind, follow how to fill holes in a wall. If instead of tape you have marks in a damp area with black stains, that is mould, not glue. See how to remove mould from a wall.
Frequently asked questions
How do I remove double-sided tape from a wall without ruining the paint?
Warm the tape with a hairdryer for 30-60 seconds, run dental floss behind the foam and peel at a low angle, almost parallel to the wall. The residue comes off with isopropyl alcohol or a few drops of oil. If the paint peels, fill it and touch it up.
What dissolves glue on a wall?
It depends on the glue. Tape and soft glues give way to heat, isopropyl alcohol, oil or WD-40. Contact adhesives hold on until repeated applications of alcohol soften them, and acetone is only for unpainted surfaces. Always test on a hidden spot, because solvents can strip paint.
How do I remove glue from a wall without removing the paint?
With patience, going from gentle to stronger: heat, soapy water, alcohol, and only if needed a stronger solvent. Avoid dry scraping and acetone. Even so, some old tapes take a thin layer of paint with them. In that case it is repaired with filler and a touch-up.
Does WD-40 stain the wall?
It can leave a greasy mark and darken matt paint if you overdo it. Use a little on a cloth, not straight on the wall, and wash off the grease with soapy water straight away. Before painting over, the area must be completely degreased, because paint does not grip on oil.
How much do you charge to remove glue and fix the wall?
We work by the hour: €35-45 for the first hour and €28-35 per hour after that. Repairing a flaking patch or crack is €50-120, and repainting walls in white €6-8/m². Send photos by WhatsApp and you get a fixed price before we start, with an invoice including IVA (VAT).
