How to fix a loose or falling door handle

A loose door handle can almost always be fixed in ten minutes with a screwdriver or an Allen key: you tighten the hidden screw in the rose or replace the spindle that links the handle to the mechanism. If the handle on an aluminium door or a balcony door wobbles, tightening the plate screws or replacing the whole handle usually does it. If we do it, it is charged at the handyman hourly rate, from €35-45 for the first hour.

Quick answer

To fix a loose handle: find the screw, which is usually on the side of the rose (a 2 or 2.5 mm Allen key) or under a round cover. Tighten it, check the 8 mm square spindle sits straight, and if the handle is still loose replace the spring or the handle. On aluminium doors, tighten the two screws under the cover of the plate.

What you need

  • Set of 2, 2.5 and 3 mm Allen keys
  • Phillips PH1 and PH2 screwdrivers
  • Vernier callipers
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Masking tape
  • Blue thread-lock (Loctite 243 or similar)
  • 8 mm square spindle of the right length
  • Replacement spring or a complete handle set
  • A2 stainless steel screws
  • A few drops of fine oil

Step by step

  1. 1

Leave the door open and wedged

Put a wedge under it so it cannot close. If the handle is on the inside, never shut the door before checking that the outside handle opens it.

  2. 2

    Find the screw

Look for a small hole on the side of the handle neck. If you cannot see it, twist the rose to the left or pull it off: some have a push-fit cover that hides two screws.

  3. 3

    Tighten with the right key

Try a 2 mm Allen key and, if it wobbles, a 2.5 mm one. Tighten until you feel resistance, without forcing it. Check that the handle sits straight and turns without play.

  4. 4

If the screw will not grip, use thread-lock

Take the screw out, clean the thread, put a drop of blue thread-lock on it and screw it back in. Wait 15 minutes before using the handle.

  5. 5

Take the handle off if it wobbles

Pull the handle off the spindle once the screw is loose and remove the rose. Look at the spindle: if it is bent or comes out short, replace it with a new one of the same thickness.

  6. 6

    Measure the new spindle

Measure the thickness of the door and add the two backplates. The spindle should protrude 10-15 mm each side so it engages both handles. Use 8 mm on an interior door; on aluminium, measure yours with the callipers.

  7. 7

    Check the spring

Open the backplate (it usually comes off with two screws) and check the spring is not broken. If the handle does not return to horizontal, replace the spring or the whole mechanism.

  8. 8

    On aluminium: lift the covers

Lift the plastic covers with a fingernail or a thin screwdriver and tighten the two plate screws. If the holes in the profile have widened, use larger screws or fill them with resin.

  9. 9

    Reassemble, oil and test

Refit the handle, put a drop of fine oil on the mechanism and open and close the door 10 times. Also test it from the other side.

Why a handle comes loose and which type you have

Before you take anything apart, look at what kind of handle you have. There are three very different systems and mixing them up is the commonest mistake.

Interior door handle with a rose and a side screw. This is the most common type in flats. It is held by a small grub screw with an Allen head on the side of the handle neck. With use it works loose, the handle creeps outwards and the door stops opening.

Handle with a push-fit rose cover. The rose hides two long screws that pass through the door. It comes loose when those screws lose their grip, and the handle wobbles as you push it up or down.

Aluminium, balcony door or window handle. It is fixed with two screws under a plastic cover, one on each side of the plate. Turning the spindle, 7 or 8 mm, moves the espagnolette (cremona) or the latch. The handle comes loose because the plate screws are slack or the spindle is worn.

Usual causes: screw, spindle and spring

A loose screw explains most cases. You fix it by tightening, but if it keeps working loose you need to ask why. Sometimes the screw thread has worn, and a drop of blue thread-lock is all it needs to stay put.

The spindle (cuadradillo) is the square bar that goes through the door and carries the turn from one handle to the other. If it is too short, the handle sits to one side and slides off. If the spindle is 8 mm and the hole in the handle is 7, it wobbles. Measure it with callipers and swap it for one of the right length, equal to the thickness of the door plus the two backplates.

The spring brings the handle back to horizontal. When it breaks, the handle hangs down and looks loose even though it is fixed firmly. You replace it by opening the backplate, and replacement springs cost a few euros at Leroy Merlin and any ferretería (hardware shop). If the whole mechanism is worn, it is easier to replace the complete handle set.

Common mistakes with door handles

  • Looking for the screw in the wrong place. Many handles hide it under the rose. If you cannot see one, twist the rose or pull it off.
  • Using the wrong Allen key. A 2.5 mm key in a 2 mm screw rounds off the head and ruins the screw.
  • Overtightening the long rose screws. The ones in chipboard snap, and in a hollow door they give way and leave the rose crooked.
  • Losing the spindle when you pull it out. If the door is shut and you go out the other side, you are locked out. Keep the door open and wedged.
  • Buying a handle without measuring. There are 70 mm centres and others, and the distance between the handle and the lock cylinder (bombín) varies. Also check whether it has a cylinder, a thumb-turn or a closed hole.
  • Swapping aluminium handles for interior ones. They do not have the same spindle and do not stand up to the weather.

When to call a professional

Most loose handles are an easy job. Call us when the handle has snapped inside, when the mechanism does not return to position, when the door has been locked from the inside and will not open, or if it is a balcony door with an espagnolette that will not turn. On aluminium, you also need to identify the profile series, and sometimes order the part made to size.

At Manitas Costa we work on the handyman hourly rate: €35-45 for the first hour and €28-35 for the following ones, and a loose handle rarely takes more than half an hour. We usually take the chance to oil the hinge or check how the door latches too. See our handyman by the hour service, the handyman hourly rate and, if a lock or latch has to be replaced, carpenter at home.

If the door also does not close properly, the cause may be the hinges: there is the guide on how to adjust door hinges. If it is a lock that is failing, see how to change a door lock, and if you have got stuck in a room, how to open a stuck door. For balcony doors, there is how to fix an aluminium window.

Salt air, damp and handles on the seafront

In Torrevieja, Benidorm, Dénia or Valencia, balcony and terrace handles suffer more than interior ones. Salt air rusts untreated steel screws and leaves the plate corroded, and spindles wear down from the rust. The handle ends up working loose every few months. If you live on the first or second line from the sea, swap the screws for A2 stainless steel ones and choose handles in lacquered aluminium, nickel-plated brass or stainless steel.

In holiday lets, where hundreds of people use the same door, springs wear out sooner. A mid-range handle set with a bearing lasts much longer than the basic model. And in a building with a comunidad de vecinos (residents' association), if the loose handle is on the main entrance or the garage door, do not touch it: tell the administrator, because it is a common element.

Frequently asked questions

How do you tighten a loose door handle?

Find the screw on the side of the handle neck, normally with a 2 or 2.5 mm Allen head, or under the rose. Tighten until the handle sits straight, without overdoing it. If it works loose again, add a drop of blue thread-lock before tightening.

Why does the handle on my aluminium door keep falling off?

Because the plate screws under the plastic covers have worked loose, or because the spindle is worn. Tighten the screws, and if the hole in the profile has widened, use thicker screws or replace the whole handle.

What size spindle does my handle need?

On interior doors it is almost always 8 mm. On windows and balcony doors it can be 7 or 8 mm. Measure the bar with callipers and add the thickness of the door and the two backplates. A spindle that is too long can be cut with a hacksaw.

How much does it cost to have you fix a door handle?

It is charged at the handyman hourly rate: €35-45 for the first hour and €28-35 for the following ones. A loose handle is fixed in under half an hour, and if we bring a new handle you only pay for the part. We give a fixed price before we start.

Can I change just the handle without changing the lock?

Yes, as long as you keep the same centres and the spindle is compatible. You take off both handles, remove the spindle and fit the new set. Buy a model from the same series or measure the hole first. If the lock is failing too, it is worth changing it.
